Overall Review: So the loaded and updated Netgear firmware just doesn't do this router any justice. It has also been a bear (for me) to implement ipv6 over, but the extra options and functionality (for now) justify the lack of ipv6. A couple thing that stock firmware have going for it are native ipv6 implementation, with no configuration or hair pulling required, and extreme stability. The available third party firmware has been extremely unreliable. At this level, a purchaser is either utilizing this for an enterprise set up or is a consummate tinkerer, and the Netgear provided firmware should account for that. This is really inexcusible, as for this kind of price tag, you should receive a lot of bells and whistles. This may be my fault, so no deducts.Ĭons: All the firmware has issues.Stock firmware is virtually identical to my WNDR4500, as well as other Netgear routers I have owned or seen. Pros: Awesome, future proof hardwareTriple channelsConnection speedAestheticsStock firmware stabilityThird party firmware capabilities and flexibilityMU-MIMO, beamforming, active antennas, smart connect, port aggregation (teaming)Good range and speeds, but not great. I must note that Newegg was very helpful when I called customer service and made the exchange without question and in a timely manner. Too bad, if the router worked it would have been an awesome beast. I looked around online and apparently this is a very common problem for this model.
This time all I did was setup the SSID names, I skipped the firmware update just in case that was the issue. Yeah, well, the second NETGEAR R8500 Nighthawk X8 did the same exact thing in less than three hours. Ok, no big deal, stuff happens, I'll just exchange it. The only thing I did was do the requested firmware update and setup my SSID names, and bam, continuous reboot loop. Unfortunately though, only a day after setting it up it lost internet connection, and upon resetting it I was never able to get it to restart. I received my first NETGEAR R8500 Nighthawk X8 in a timely fashion, thank you Newegg. I'm not sure what's going on with this model of Netgear router as I have had many other Netgear products in the past that have been great. I thought I was getting a deal on Black Friday, but really all I got was junk. Overall Review: I would not recommend this product at all. Pros: - Large enough to be used as a boat anchor.Ĭons: - Does not work, so quite literally all it's good for is being used as a boat anchor. I think it's within the realm of possibility of even getting a 5 star/egg if they improve firmware and improve the mobile app.
I would upgrade this to 4 stars/eggs if I could figure out the latency issue. Jury is still out, but wanted to go ahead and write a review. I am very anxious to use some of the additional features that the router has like parental control, aggregate ports, and additional USB devices for storage and backup. Reluctantly considering putting my primary gaming computer between the modem and the router, or at least putting a lighter weight router between the modem and NX8. Perhaps the latency increase is the cost of using the high end router and I need to explore using dd-wrt, but as a gamer, it's a huge con. Overall Review: I can not immediately recommend this router to any of my gamer friends on the basis of the latency increase without a way to fix it. Once in awhile, I observe a fast disconnect and reconnect from my smart phone on the primary 5 ghz network. (Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated) ***- Increased my latency by 7-9ms to any server. Range is slightly better but still had to use a range extender for a device that lives outside, but I'm not complaining there. Like it, however generated OpenVPN scripts did not work without modification Pros: - Support for Dynamic DNS service (I use NO-IP)
